A dedicated coffee machine earns its worktop space if you drink several fresh coffees a day and care about flavour, texture or simply speed over instant or a trip to a café. The UK market spans £47 pod machines to £830 fully automatic bean-to-cup systems, so the first job is to match the format to how you actually drink coffee — not to the spec sheet.

Coffee machines fall into a few formats, and most of the differences below come down to how much of the brewing you want the machine — or yourself — to do.

• Pod / capsule: sealed capsules, no grinding or dosing; lowest effort and entry price
• Manual espresso: 15-bar pump + portafilter; you grind, dose, tamp and froth — lowest prices, most control
