Review Methodology
Last updated: July 2026
Every review published on FoxVerdict follows a structured, evidence-first process. This page explains each step, why it exists, and how it protects the quality and independence of our verdicts.
1. How We Select Products to Review
We prioritise products that are widely sold in the UK, have significant purchase volume on Amazon, and fall into categories where buying decisions are genuinely difficult. We do not accept payment to review a specific product. Products are selected based on editorial judgement and reader demand.
2. Evidence Collection
Before any review content is written, we compile an evidence file for each product. This file includes:
- Official manufacturer specifications
- Amazon rating and review count at the time of evidence collection
- Common user complaints extracted from review patterns
- Category benchmarks (where available)
- Price history and current availability
- Notable features and any known issues
The evidence file is version-controlled. Every published review displays the evidence version number so readers can see whether a review is based on recent or older evidence.
3. AI-Assisted Synthesis
We use AI language models (including Claude, ChatGPT, and Gemini) to help synthesise the evidence file into a structured draft review. The AI receives only the evidence we have collected — it is not asked to research the product independently or generate claims from training data.
The AI output is a starting point, not a finished review. It produces a structured draft covering: summary, pros, cons, performance, design, suitability, FAQs, and alternatives. Every field in the draft is treated as provisional until reviewed by a human editor.
4. Human Editorial Review
Every AI-generated draft is reviewed by a human editor before publication. The editor:
- Verifies all factual claims against the evidence file
- Corrects any inaccuracies, exaggerations, or unsupported claims
- Adjusts the overall score to reflect the actual strength of the evidence
- Reviews pros and cons for balance and accuracy
- Approves or rejects the review for publication
A review is only published after the editor explicitly marks it as approved. There is no automatic publishing from AI output.
5. Scoring Philosophy
FoxVerdict uses a 0–10 scoring scale. Scores reflect the quality of the evidence supporting our verdict, not just the product's features.
- 9–10 — Exceptional. Strong evidence of best-in-class performance. Highly recommended.
- 7–8 — Good. Solid evidence of above-average performance. Recommended with minor caveats.
- 5–6 — Average. Performs adequately but does not stand out. Consider alternatives.
- 3–4 — Below average. Notable weaknesses are well-evidenced. Approach with caution.
- 1–2 — Poor. Strong negative evidence. Not recommended.
Scores are not adjusted based on affiliate commission rates, manufacturer relationships, or editorial convenience.
6. Price Verification
Prices displayed on FoxVerdict are sourced from Amazon at the time of evidence collection. Prices change frequently. Every review displays a “Price checked” date so you can see how current the price information is. We recommend verifying the current price directly on Amazon before purchasing.
7. Update Policy
Reviews are updated when:
- A significant price change occurs (more than 20% in either direction)
- A new model generation is released that changes the competitive landscape
- New evidence emerges that materially affects the verdict
- A factual error is reported by a reader or identified internally
Every update increments the review version number. The evidence version and review version are visible on every published review.
8. Editorial Independence
FoxVerdict is not sponsored by any manufacturer. We do not accept free products in exchange for positive coverage. Affiliate commissions are earned at the same rate regardless of the score we assign — we have no financial incentive to score a product higher than the evidence supports.
Our full Editorial Policy describes the standards we apply to all editorial decisions, including corrections and reader complaints.
9. Affiliate Relationship
FoxVerdict earns affiliate commissions when readers click through to Amazon and make a purchase. This is how the site funds its editorial operation. It does not change what we recommend or how we score products. See our Affiliate Disclosure for the full explanation.
Example Reviews
See our methodology in practice across a real category. Portable air conditioners are one of the most technically complex consumer product categories we cover — BTU rating inconsistencies, voltage compatibility issues, and installer-dependent performance make evidence quality particularly important.
