Air Fryers Reviews

An air fryer is a compact countertop appliance that cooks food using rapid, high-velocity hot air circulated by a fan, typically at temperatures between 160°C and 200°C. Food sits in a perforated basket — or, on dual-drawer models, two separate baskets — so hot air reaches the surface from all sides, producing a crisp exterior with little or no added oil. In effect, it is a small, powerful convection oven repackaged for the worktop.

UK households adopted air fryers in large numbers during a period of sharply rising energy bills, drawn by the promise of a smaller appliance that could cook everyday meals — chips, chicken, roasted vegetables — without heating a full-sized oven. The category's growth has also been driven by kitchens with limited space, by cooks wanting a lower-fat alternative to deep frying, and by the appeal of shorter cooking times for weeknight meals. Dual-drawer designs, which let two different foods cook simultaneously to finish at the same time, have become particularly popular with families.

The core difference from a conventional oven is one of scale and airflow. An air fryer's cooking chamber is far smaller, so it heats up in a fraction of the time and concentrates hot air much closer to the food. This produces faster cooking and a crisper surface for foods suited to that treatment, but the small chamber also means real usable capacity is often lower than the headline litre figure suggests, and cooking evenness can vary between the centre and edges of the basket. An oven remains better suited to large-format or multi-tray cooking; an air fryer excels at quick, small-batch meals.

FoxVerdict's approach to this category is evidence-first. Rather than repeating manufacturer specification sheets, we cook standardised batches of common UK foods in every unit we review, measure how evenly they cook, weigh the actual usable capacity against the figure claimed on the box, and record energy consumed per cycle so it can be compared against a conventional oven. Where independent data is not yet available, we say so plainly rather than presenting manufacturer claims as verified fact.

How We Review

We cook four standardised food tests in each air fryer: frozen chips, fresh chicken thighs, broccoli florets, and a cake tin bake. We measure cooking time, evenness, and energy consumed per cycle.

  • Cooking evenness — measured across frozen chips, fresh chicken thighs, and vegetables, checking for under-cooked centres or overdone edges
  • Actual vs claimed capacity — we weigh the maximum usable food load and compare it against the manufacturer's stated litre capacity
  • Energy per cycle — measured for each standardised food test and compared against an equivalent conventional oven cook
  • Noise level — recorded during operation, since fan-driven models vary noticeably in operating volume
  • Basket vs dual-drawer design — assessed for practicality, including whether two foods can be cooked to finish together
  • Ease of cleaning — basket coating durability, dishwasher compatibility, and how easily cooked-on residue is removed

Frequently Asked Questions

Do air fryers save energy compared to an oven?

For small portions, yes. An air fryer heats a smaller space faster. For family-sized meals, the saving is less clear. We measure energy per cooking cycle in each review.

What size air fryer do I need?

Manufacturer capacity figures are measured in litres and often overstate usable space. A 4-litre basket comfortably serves two people; for four people, look for 6–8 litres of genuine usable capacity.

What is the difference between a basket and a dual-drawer air fryer?

A basket air fryer has a single cooking chamber. A dual-drawer model has two independent baskets with separate heating elements, allowing two different foods to cook at different times or temperatures and finish together. Dual-drawer units are generally larger and take up more worktop space.

Do I need to preheat an air fryer?

Most manufacturers state that preheating is not required, since the small cooking chamber heats quickly. In practice, a short preheat can improve evenness for foods that benefit from an immediate hot surface, such as chips. We note preheat behaviour where it affects results in our cooking tests.

Can you bake in an air fryer?

Many models can bake small items such as cakes or bread rolls using an appropriately sized tin, and we include a cake tin bake in our standardised test set. Results vary by model due to differences in airflow and even heat distribution within the basket.

Are air fryer baskets dishwasher safe?

Most non-stick baskets are marketed as dishwasher safe, but repeated dishwasher cycles can accelerate wear of the non-stick coating compared with hand washing. We assess cleaning ease and coating durability as part of our review process.
